Last Saturday night, a somber tragedy struck the San Jose community when two Community Service Officers (CSO) from the San Jose Police Department were involved in a fatal collision while on duty. One officer was tragically killed and another critically injured in what has been suspected as a DUI incident. The San Jose Police Department expressed their deep sorrow, stating, "Our entire police family is heartbroken by this line of duty death," as per the San Jose Police Department. They continued to offer thoughts to the surviving CSO, wishing "May she have a speedy recovery."

According to the San Jose Police Department, the officers were conducting traffic control for an unrelated incident on Monterey Road when they were struck. The department will quickly muster additional details about the fallen CSO and the ongoing investigation. Acting Chief Paul Joseph will provide more information in a press conference today. It was a first: the first CSO line-of-duty death in the history of SJPD, a moment the department prays to be the last.
San Jose's Mayor Matt Mahan expressed his condolences and support in the collision's aftermath. "Our city mourns the tragic loss of one of our Community Service Officers and severe injuries sustained by another CSO in the line of duty", Mayor Mahan wrote in a post. Recognizing the everyday risks officers face, he added, "They are truly heroes." The Mayor assured that this selfish, reckless act would not go unpunished.
