Intense storm conditions in Everett prompted a large-scale rescue operation on Sunday as multiple paddle boarders were swept into distress near Mukilteo and a kayaker is still missing. The incident unfolded just before 5:20 p.m., with the Everett Fire Department being dispatched to the waters between Edgewater Park and Mukilteo, according to FOX 13 Seattle. Amidst harsh rain and winds, five people on paddle boards were either rescued or found a way to self-rescue.

Three individuals were assisted by the Everett Fire while another was helped by a Washington State Ferries rescue boat. "One person was rescued from the water and two others were found clinging to the end of the Boeing pier. They used a ladder to bring themselves to safety," said Everett Fire in a statement obtained by KATU. However, the concerns were heightened when a separate report emerged of a missing kayaker, last seen without a life jacket in vicinity of the earlier rescues.

Despite exhaustive search efforts by land, water, and air resources, the kayaker has not been located. Multiple agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard Pacific Northwest, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office, Mukilteo Fire & Police, South County Fire, and Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue all contributed to the search. Everett Police are continuing their efforts into Monday, KIRO7 reports.

In the wake of the incident, Everett Fire has reiterated essential water safety tips which include wearing an USCG-approved life jacket, carrying a whistle for signaling help, checking the weather before heading out, paddling with a companion, and understanding tides.
