In a distressing series of events that unfolded within the walls of the Montgomery County Jail, Alyssia Moulton experienced what can only be described as an egregious disregard for her medical and humane needs — this according to a lawsuit she has filed against the medical provider for the facility, Southern Health Partners, Inc. Approximately a year ago, in August 2023, Moulton, unaware of her pregnancy, was booked on burglary charges, according to WSMV. It wasn't until her intake at the jail that a pregnancy test confirmed what would soon become a harrowing ordeal.
Reportedly, despite notifying the jail’s medical staff about her condition and subsequent labor pains, Moulton ended up giving birth alone in her cell, specifically in a toilet. "No one should have a baby in a jail cell. Especially when I made them very much aware, ‘Hey, I’m having a baby, let’s get to a hospital,’” Moulton told WSMV.
The case has brought to light serious allegations against the healthcare provider, including claims of medical negligence and due process violations, as outlined in a Law and Crime report. The lawsuit, which also names the baby as a plaintiff, accuses the medical staff and Southern Health Partners of being deliberately indifferent to Moulton’s suffering and medical needs.
Additionally, the lawsuit indicates that no pain medication management was administered leading up to or during childbirth, an error compounded by the fact that Moulton was in solitary confinement for the duration of her jail stay. According to the suit, detailed by Law and Crime, she spent 23 hours per day in her cell up until the delivery of her baby and hospital transport.
