Early Saturday morning in South Boston turned contentious as police arrested a 29-year-old man on assault charges after a "person with a gun" report. Nicholas Atwood, a resident of the neighborhood, was taken into custody following an incident that involved him allegedly brandishing a firearm at a bystander. The Boston Police Department reported that Atwood was weaving through traffic on his bicycle, hitting multiple vehicles with his fist as he passed by. A witness attempted to confront Atwood, leading to an escalation wherein a passenger in the vehicle threw water at the suspect, who then pointed a gun at him.
An official description from Boston Police Operations allowed officers to quickly locate Atwood, and he was subsequently apprehended near 250 Summer Street. A pat frisk revealed a holstered firearm inside of Atwood's waistband, identified as a Sig Sauer P365 carrying one round in the chamber and nine in the magazine. According to the Boston Police Department, Atwood also had an active license to carry the weapon, which has been seized pending investigation, following revelations that he had consumed alcohol prior to the event.
Atwood is facing charges of Assault by Means of a Dangerous Weapon, and Carrying a Firearm while Intoxicated, as stated by the Boston Police. The arrest report details the nature of the altercation and the ensuing actions by law enforcement to ensure public safety. Atwood is set to be arraigned at South Boston District Court, where the circumstances will be further scrutinized.
