Early Saturday morning, the Springfield Police Department took a loaded firearm off the streets and arrested 23-year-old Benny Tran. According to the Springfield Police Department's official website, the incident occurred at the intersection of East Columbus Avenue and Liberty Street.
Officers were first called to the 0-100 block of Hampden Street at about 4:10 a.m. after reports that Tran allegedly threatened to shoot bystanders near a food truck. Springfield PD stated that, when they found Tran and tried to detain him for questioning, he initiated a brief foot chase that ended near Gridiron Street. A loaded firearm was discovered in Tran's pants pocket after the pursuit that concluded with his capture.
The charges laid against Tran are significant: they include carrying a firearm without a license and carrying a loaded firearm without a license. These charges represent not just legal infractions but a broader concern for the community, where the presence of illegal firearms on the streets poses both a tangible and psychological threat to safety and order.
In a statement obtained by the Springfield Police Department, it is clear that the quick response of officers potentially averted a dangerous situation.
