In the early hours of August 3rd, Springfield Police Officers were called to the scene of an unusual disturbance on Roosevelt Avenue. The officers' prompt response led to the recovery of two loaded large capacity firearms and the arrest of a 19-year-old Springfield resident, according to a recent report by the Springfield Police Department.
The incident unfolded around 1:15 a.m., initiated by a report of a vehicle hitting several objects and maybe, a parked car. Officers arriving on site discovered two individuals who fled on foot at the sight of police. One of them, Teshaun Dancy, was apprehended soon after, with police finding a firearm on his person with a capacity of 15 rounds.
Further investigation at the inoperable vehicle, which needed towing, led to the discovery of a loaded VSKA rifle capable of holding 24 rounds of ammunition. Dancy now faces multiple charges including carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a high-capacity magazine, and leaving the scene of property damage, among others.
The string of charges against Dancy, as per the Springfield Police Department, highlights the ongoing challenges police face with illegal firearms on the street. "Carrying a Loaded Large Capacity Firearm on a Public Way," "Possession of a High-Capacity Magazine/Feeding Device (Two Counts)," and, "Unlicensed Possession of an Assault Weapon" are just a few of the offenses detailed in the report. Such cases emphasize the prevalence and danger of unlicensed weapons within urban areas.
