San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced a critical contract agreement between SEIU Local 87 and the San Francisco Maintenance Contractors Association, successfully averting an impending janitor strike. SEIU Local 87, representing over 5,000 janitors, found common ground with the contractors' association, ensuring continued janitorial services in buildings throughout the city. The new contract, effective through July 31, 2028, resulted from tireless negotiations at City Hall facilitated by Mayor Breed and federal mediator Rachel Lev.
"I want to thank all the parties for working collaboratively through the night to reach a solution that avoids a strike and gives our hard-working janitors the support and recognition they deserve for the difficult and important work they do every day," Mayor Breed said, as reported by SF.gov. This development comes after the janitors had authorized a strike should negotiations fail, raising concerns about potential disruptions and hardships for the city's workforce. In a display of commitment to timely resolution, talks continued intensely, including overnight discussions.
SEIU Local 87 president Olga Miranda credited the union members for their tenacity in the lead-up to the agreement. "Our members turned up the heat in the streets to fight for equity in San Francisco," Miranda told SF.gov. She underscored the momentous nature of the contract in securing fair wages, health insurance, and respect for the janitors—essential workers who maintain the city's commercial spaces.
On behalf of the San Francisco Maintenance Contractors Association, spokesperson Jim Beard expressed satisfaction with the settlement. "After long and difficult negotiations, we believe the settlement is fair for all stakeholders involved: it is fair for our valued Janitors who work hard to keep our buildings clean. It is also fair for our clients and their tenants who bring so much to the city", Beard said, per details from SF.gov. Mayor Breed also received appreciation for facilitating the process toward an amicable agreement.
