Washington D.C. faces an ongoing battle against crime and, in the latest development, the Metropolitan Police Department has taken a suspect into custody in connection with a string of robberies across Northwest businesses. In a press release issued on Wednesday, authorities provided details of the arrest made by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force.
On the line-up of offenses is one Maleek Geeter, 35, characterized by the police reports as having "no fixed address." The arrest, which occurred on August 21, was the culmination of efforts to bring to justice an individual linked to multiple criminal incidents dating back to April of this year. According to MPD's announcement, Geeter has been formally charged with a series of robberies and attempted robbery offenses.
The first robbery took place on April 3, where Geeter allegedly overpowered an employee after jumping over a sales counter at a U Street business, successfully making off with cash. The next day, a similar incident occurred on 17th Street. An attempted robbery followed on 14th Street, where an employee managed to thwart Geeter's efforts. The last noted robbery took place on April 20, with Geeter seizing money directly from a register on L Street before fleeing the scene.
The arrest has undoubtedly brought some relief to local proprietors, hopeful for a reprieve from the wave of robberies. More information on Geeter's arraignment and subsequent legal proceedings is expected to follow in the upcoming days.
