An unusual incident unfolded early this morning when an SUV crashed through the wall of a Whole Foods parking garage in northwest D.C. and came to a halt, dangling precariously over the edge. The event occurred around 9 a.m. at the location on the 4500 block of 40th Street, as reported by FOX 5 DC. Images captured at the scene showed the front half of the white SUV suspended outside the structure, with its rear still inside the garage.
Despite the hazardous situation, officials were quick to securely establish a safety zone around the area. Additionally, a thorough inspection by experts confirmed that while the damage to the building was substantial, it did not pose any immediate structural stability issues. The driver of the SUV was also able to safely exit the vehicle without sustaining injuries, as confirmed by authorities in a DC News Now article.
DC Fire and EMS personnel were dispatched to the scene near the Tenleytown Metro station, where they found building debris scattered on the sidewalk below the second-floor garage. The photographs shared by the emergency services displayed the front tires hanging over the ledge, a testament to the gravity of the incident. As NBC Washington documented, no passersby or other vehicles were harmed in the immediate aftermath of the crash.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, with authorities diligently working to unravel the course of events leading up to the accident. Utility crews were also called to the scene to assess and manage any potential disruptions caused by the crash. Amidst the chaotic backdrop, the area was cordoned off to ensure public safety until the removal of the precariously lodged SUV could be conclusively done, and to make absolutely certain the continued integrity of the parking structure. Ongoing updates and information about the incident and subsequent traffic advisories will no doubt be released as they become available.
