A teen suspect is now in custody in connection with the Hartford Avenue shooting earlier this year. Montgomery County Police apprehended a 17-year-old male for the incident that took place on February 2, when an attempted carjacking turned violent.
According to the Montgomery County Department of Police, the altercation began as an adult male and his teenage son were moving items between vehicles. Four individuals, including the now-charged teen, allegedly attempted to quite literally snatch away the older man's car. The attempt spiraled into an aggressive scuffle, resulting in the adult getting shot in both the head and abdomen. Although the victim was hospitalized, he was later released after treatment.
The investigation swiftly unfolded as detectives pieced together the chaotic puzzle, pinpointing the 17-year-old suspect's involvement. He was subsequently charged with multiple felonies: attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, armed robbery, and the use of a firearm during a felony offense.
On August 9, the youth, already detained on unrelated charges at a Prince George’s County detention center, was transported to Montgomery County for processing. Confirming the serious nature of the allegations, he has been held without the possibility to easily post bond, as stated by police officials. The case unfolds as community members grapple with the implications of youth entanglement in violent crime and the broader discussions around juvenile justice reform.
