
Early Sunday morning in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, a 16-year-old male from Plainfield was fatally shot by police officers assigned to a Robbery Task Force. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the shooting occurred near the 1800 block of South Blue Island Avenue around 1:15 a.m. after officers heard multiple shots fired. Chicago Police Department officials said that officers encountered two armed offenders, and during the engagement, a teenager, Alex Angel Cortez, was hit.
Following the incident, Cortez was rushed to a hospital and pronounced dead at 1:56 a.m., the information, provided by police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. Meanwhile, the father of the slain teen told WGN-TV in an interview that his son did not possess a gun, contrary to the police narrative. "He gave me a hug, saying, ‘Dad, how are you?'" the father said, shortly before the incident took place.
