Last night in the town of Roslyn, Kittitas County, a wildlife encounter resulted in a teenage girl receiving minor injuries when an adult male black bear struck her. The incident, which happened around 9:36 p.m., led to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) being notified of the situation, according to a statement from the department.
Bob Weaver, WDFW South Central Captain, conveyed relief over the outcome of the confrontation stating, “We are very thankful her injuries did not require immediate medical care.” The 17-year-old victim sustained superficial scratches and torn clothing during the brief encounter. Her experience, though chilling, fortunately, did not escalate to a more severe altercation with the bear.
In response to the incident, a coalition of local authorities, including the Cle Elum/Roslyn Police, WDFW officers, and the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office, collaborated to locate and euthanize the bear close to the scene. WDFW officials emphasized their gratitude to their fellow officers for their swift actions in a follow-up statement, ensuring the safety of the community at large.
Following the removal of the bear, forensic evidence was collected, and the animal was set to be transported to the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic lab for evaluation. The analysis aims to shed light on the bear's behavior and health, factors which could provide critical insights into the motivation behind this rare interaction between humans and wildlife. The examination may also serve as a cornerstone in understanding how future incidents of a similar nature can be prevented or managed with greater efficacy.
