As Texans gear up for the Labor Day weekend, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is ramping up enforcement statewide to ensure road safety. The enhanced measures, part of Operation Crash Awareness Reduction Effort (CARE), will take place from Friday, Aug. 30, through Monday, Sept. 2. According to KTSM, Texas highway patrol troopers will be on the lookout for traffic infractions such as speeding, driving under the influence, and other law violations.
Last year, during a similar enforcement effort, DPS officers issued a surplus of 43,179 citations and warnings. "During last year’s Labor Day enforcement campaign, Troopers issued more than 43,179 citations and warnings, including 4,332 for speeding, 990 for no insurance, 421 for individuals without seat belts or child seat restraints, and over 207 for Move Over, Slow Down violations," the department shared. As reported by Bluebonnet News, there have already been more than 4,510 Move Over, Slow Down violations so far in 2024.
In addition to heightened road presence, DPS has distributed a suite of safety tips for motorists. These include driving sober or planning alternative transportation if alcohol will be consumed, adhering to "Move Over or Slow Down" laws for emergency vehicles, and buckling up as required by law. Furthermore, DPS urges drivers to eliminate distractions, slow down in adverse conditions, and keep to the right unless passing on multi-lane roads. These guidelines aim to reduce the risk of accidents during a period traditionally marked by heavy traffic.
