The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken the Mayor of Thomson into custody, charging him over allegations involving the provision of alcohol to inmates. Benjamin Cary Cranford, aged 52, faces charges of furnishing prohibited items to inmates and attempting to commit a felony. This development unfolds as the latest in a series of events that question the boundaries of the city's leadership and the entrusted guardians of its laws.
On June 6, the Thomson Police asked the GBI to investigate claims that Cranford gave alcohol to an inmate work crew on June 4. This is a serious allegation. On August 14, a McDuffie County Grand Jury reviewed the evidence and issued an arrest warrant for Cranford.
Following his arrest, the mayor was promptly booked at the McDuffie County Jail. The GBI official press release notes that the investigation remains ongoing. Local authorities urge individuals with further information to come forward, providing contact options such as a phone call to the GBI at 706-595-2575, an anonymous tip via 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), and digital avenues including an online submission form or the 'See Something, Send Something' mobile app.
