On Wednesday morning in Phelan, what began as a report of theft at a construction site led to the recovery of a stolen excavator and the arrest of two men. The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department informed that at approximately 8:20 a.m. on August 21, deputies arrived at the scene where, "someone cut the fence and stole an excavator and some of the fencing," as mentioned in a press release.

Deputy A. Salazar subsequently authored a search warrant for a nearby residence where the stolen property was suspected to be held. The search, executed on the same day, led to the location and reclaim of the excavator on a property in the 5000 block of Yucca Terrace. Residents Jonathan Owens, 34, and Mario Munoz, 42 were both arrested without incident and face charges for possession of stolen property and vandalism. Owens' bail is set at $30,000, whereas Munoz, currently on Post Release Community Supervision, is being held without bail.

Both suspects were booked at the High Desert Detention Center. Owens, a San Bernardino resident, and Munoz, from Phelan, were found in the dwelling where the excavator was being kept. "Jonathan Owens was booked at the High Desert Detention Center for possession of stolen property and vandalism. He is currently being held in lieu of $30,000.00 bail," detailed the Sheriff's Office. Munoz faces similar charges and awaits his court proceedings, his previous legal standing complicating the matter.

The Sheriff-Coroner's Office urges the community for any information regarding the incident. Those with knowledge of the case can reach out to Deputy A.
