The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced closures on State Route 89A to facilitate a rockfall mitigation project that's been underway since a rockslide occurred in March 2023. Specifically, drivers will need to circumvent a 3-mile stretch between Cookstove Draw and Oak Creek Vista, identified by mileposts 387 to 390, due to closures slated for early mornings and most of the workday.
According to ADOT, SR 89A will be closed from approximately 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, and Friday, Aug. 16. The roadway is also scheduled to be completely closed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday through Friday, Aug. 19-23. Although these measures may significantly disrupt usual travel plans, they are essential to ensure public safety and the stable longevity of the route. Motorists are advised to fully utilize Interstate 17 and SR 179 as detour routes during these periods.
The project, expected to continue into the fall, aims to stabilize the cliff face hovering above SR 89A, which was compromised earlier last year. The high-traffic area remains subject to narrowed lanes and alternating traffic regulated by temporary signals, and a vehicle-width limitation of 10 feet is in place within the work zone for the duration of the project.
ADOT and its contractor are reportedly taking steps to coordinate with local and regional safety agencies. These measures are being implemented not only to maintain emergency vehicle access but also to be ready should unexpected events arise, including the potential necessity to rapidly respond to wildfires. Travelers looking for real-time highway conditions can access information through the ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the az511 app, or by calling the number 511.
