The United States Tennis Association (USTA) has declared the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tennessee, the standout star of its annual Outstanding Facility Awards. As noted in the official announcement by the City of Memphis, the honor is considered the pinnacle of recognition regarding tennis facility quality across the nation.
This year, the Leftwich Tennis Center reigned supreme over a spread of 41 contenders, garnering the title of Featured Facility of the Year. The commendable, multimillion-dollar rejuvenation and expansion this facility underwent in 2023, setting a new benchmark for excellence. Furthermore, the joint effort by the City of Memphis, Tennis Memphis, and the University of Memphis, all shared in the glow of accomplishment, during an awards ceremony held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center as part of the 2024 US Open.
In a demonstration of community and sports excellence, the Leftwich Tennis Center includes 24 outdoor and 12 indoor courts, VIP suites, and spaces for the University of Memphis varsity tennis teams – shows Memphis' commitment to excellent sports facilities for both competitive and community events. "We are super proud that Leftwich Tennis Center has been recognized as the Featured Facility of the Year by the USTA," Memphis Mayor Paul Young stated in the City of Memphis news release, expressing the local pride in gaining such prestigious national recognition. Facilities were scrutinized on criteria like court quality, layout, aesthetics, and contribution to grassroots tennis.
Among the honored structures were public courts categorized by size, private facilities contributing to public tennis programming, such as the Austin Tennis Academy, Omni Amelia Island Resort, and a select group from educational institutions like IMG Academy. Each recipient of the honor will receive a wall plaque and a weather-resistant sign, cementing their place among the top-tier tennis institutions. "I think that this award recognizes what all Memphians know, Leftwich Tennis Center is a world-class, municipally owned facility that will serve the needs of countless members of the community for generations," concluded Memphis mayor Paul Young, expressing a long-term vision for the facility's role in the community, as stated in the City of Memphis news release.
The USTA, a key driver of tennis in the United States, continues to promulgate the growth of the sport through events like the US Open and initiatives like the Featured Facility of the Year. Not just focused with charting the professional landscape, its philanthropic branch, the USTA Foundation, sets its sights on fostering tennis and education among under-resourced youth, as noted on the USTA's website. This aligns with Leftwich Tennis Center's mission, further rooting the Center's significance within its community and beyond.
