Washington D.C. residents and visitors should prepare for another bout of inclement weather today, as the National Weather Service forecasts a 70% chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Temperatures are expected to reach a high near 84 degrees, with northwest winds blowing at 5 to 9 mph. Accumulated rainfall may be less than a tenth of an inch, although thunderstorms could bring higher amounts, as obtained by the NWS Washington D.C.
For those venturing out tonight, particularly the southern waters, the forecast suggests a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11 p.m., followed by isolated showers until 2 a.m. The NWS advisory notes the potential for strong thunderstorms that may warrant Special Marine Warnings.
In addition to rainy forecasts, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for parts of D.C. until 10 a.m. EDT this morning. The advisory warns of up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low lying areas near the shoreline due to tidal flooding. This includes areas adjacent to Ohio Drive and the Hains Point Loop Road, as well as near the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial, with tides one to one and a half feet above normal, as detailed by the NWS.
Looking ahead to the rest of the week, a sunny respite is on the way. The NWS anticipates clear skies starting Tuesday with a high near 78, remaining sunny through the week and warming up, culminating in a high near 91 by Sunday. Residents should take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property today, bearing in mind that the next high tide at Washington Channel is expected at 8:10 a.m. and again at 8:40 p.m. tonight, as reported by the National Weather Service.
