Extensive Westbound I-10 Closure in Phoenix Amidst Interstate Improvement Works

Major delays are on the horizon this weekend. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced that westbound Interstate 10 will be entirely out of commission between US 60 and SR 143 from 10 p.m. on Friday, August 9, to 4 a.m. on Monday, August 12. The closure, detailed in a news alert for bridge construction efforts, means that you'll need to reroute if you're planning on hitting this stretch of roadway.

The westbound I-10 at Elliot, Baseline, and Broadway as well as the westbound US 60 on-ramps at McClintock Drive, Rural Road, and Mill Avenue will all shut down at 8 p.m. Friday and reopen at 4 a.m. Monday. Finding alternative paths is key, so ADOT has suggested a detour using eastbound Loop 202 to Loop 101, and then back to westbound Loop 202 for access beyond the blockage. According to ADOT, these adjustments are necessary for the greater good of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project.

The far-reaching impact of these closures includes the eastbound I-10 off-ramp at 48th Street, which will close at 10 p.m. on August 9 and is not expected to reopen until late 2024 due to ramp reconfiguration. Motorists will have to utilize the ramps at Broadway or Baseline roads as an alternative. The ongoing I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project falls under the Regional Transportation Plan of the Maricopa Association of Governments. It's financed by a half-cent sales tax that was green-lit by Maricopa County voters back in 2004 with Proposition 400.
