The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced that southbound Interstate 17 at Jomax Road will be closed from 9 p.m. this Friday, August 16, until 5 a.m. Monday, August 19. This closure is part of a project to upgrade the pavement for a smoother drive, a project travelers have been observing over the past few months. During this time, traffic will be redirected via the I-17 off- and on-ramps at Jomax Road, which may result in potential delays and detours.
For residents and commuters in the area, ADOT has also noted that southbound I-17 will be reduced to a single lane between Loop 303 and Jomax Road. To help save time and reduce stress, drivers are advised to travel during off-peak hours and avoid using local streets as shortcuts. Past experience has shown that navigation apps sometimes suggest routes that local roads aren't equipped to handle. ADOT emphasizes that sticking to the official detour is the best approach for everyone, according to the news release.
Drivers should also be aware of upcoming closures beyond the current one: ADOT has outlined roadwork plans that will involve additional I-17 closures and lane restrictions as the project progresses. These improvements will cover a six-mile stretch between Happy Valley Road and State Route 74 and are distinct from the broader I-17 Improvement Project north of Anthem Way. For those who like to stay informed and prepared, ADOT recommends signing up for traffic alerts related to the project on their website.
Drivers should be prepared for delays, especially during the peak traffic times on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, despite no planned closures for the following two weekends. Local law enforcement will be stationed at intersections nearby to assist with traffic management and alleviate congestion caused by these closures. Meanwhile, crews continue to enhance the I-17 using diamond grinding techniques, as detailed by ADOT. This process is designed to create smoother and more durable roads, which should be a welcome improvement for local commuters.
