A swift recovery is expected for Winston, a juvenile cheetah at Zoo Miami, after undergoing surgery for a fractured leg. As reported by WSVN, the young feline suffered the injury to his rear left leg in July while in his enclosure—compared to a child getting hurt at play.

The exact moment when the injury occurred was unwitnessed, but Zoo Miami staff addressed the situation the next morning by transporting Winston to their animal hospital for radiographs, to ascertain the trauma's severity, Ron Magill, a zoo spokesman informed in a news release obtained by Local10. Two metal plates were, implanted to stabilize the fracture during a surgery performed by veterinary surgeons Dr. Natalia Andrade and Dr. Robin Holtsinger, and Zoo Miami’s Dr. Rodney Schnellbacher.

The procedure, carried out on July 31st, has Winston on the mend in isolation with his leg in a cast. "The surgery was successful, and Winston has since been recovering in a secluded area with a full leg cast," said Magill, emphasizing the operation's positive outcome. This Wednesday marked a pivotal point in Winston’s rehabilitation. As his cast was removed allowing the Animal Health team to evaluate the repair work, with initial signs pointing to a promising healing process.

Following the examination, Winston was re-equipped with a new cast before hobbling back to his recovery enclosure. Magill confirmed that while the fracture is healing well, zoo staff will continue with follow-up checks for the next several weeks. The cheetah's recuperation is projected to extend another six to eight weeks, reinforcing the cautious optimism surrounding his progress.
