A collision involving a car and an electric scooter has resulted in critical injuries for a 64-year-old individual in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood. The accident occurred Saturday afternoon around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Washington and Northampton streets, as per reports from local authorities. Boston Police responded to the scene, where they found the victim with life-threatening injuries. The victim was swiftly transported to a local hospital, with no immediate updates on their condition available.
The area, often busy due to its proximity to Northeastern University, has been described by local residents as dangerous. In a statement to CBS Boston, Northeastern student Talia Roche identified the intersection as problematic, saying, "It's always such an issue trying to cross the street. I feel like everyone's flying by and no one stops." Roche suggested that the presence of a traffic light and crosswalk might to greatly reduce the risk of accidents.
At the scene, a red car was observed with significant damage to the driver's side door and front windshield, its airbags deployed. According to NBC Boston, a damaged electric scooter lay near the vehicle, and a helmet was also seen on the ground. Both homicide detectives and the fatal reconstruction team were notified and responded to the scene for further investigation.
Residents' concerns regarding the safety of the intersection have been shared by other students in the area. Clara Hawkes, a sophomore at Northeastern University, described a recent close call with a vehicle, saying in an interview with CBS Boston, "I didn't see her, she didn't see me." Hawkes fortunately was not injured but urged others to remain vigilant of reckless driving. With Boston's Vision Zero records reporting more than 2,500 crashes involving motor vehicles in 2023 alone.
