The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is all charged up to bolster its infrastructure for electric vehicle (EV) drivers, announcing a boost to the current network with 18 new EV charging stations slated for various locations throughout the state. As reported by AZPM, these stations are expected to bridge the distance between power points on some of Arizona's key highways.

Travelers propelling themselves between Phoenix and Tucson on Interstate 8 will soon see two additional stations ready to recharge their vehicles. A Tuesday announcement from ADOT conveyed the plan to place these stations, saying that the new infrastructure will be an incentive for drivers to choose electric cars over their gasoline-guzzling counterparts. The stations, serving as modern-day oases in the desert, will be at convenient pit stops including gas stations, travel centers, and dining or lodging establishments.

Per the officials at ADOT, the arriving stations are estimated to be operational by late 2025, and will be positioned no more than 50 miles apart to ensure that EV drivers can travel through the state with confidence, alleviating the anxiety of finding the next charge. The construction of these facilities is fueled by the financial injection from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, a part of the federal infrastructure push which directs $5 billion nationwide, earmarking $76.5 million especially for Arizona.

They said each station is to include a minimum of four NEVI-compliant chargers designed to top up a standard electric vehicle in 30 minutes or less, a reality that aligns with today's fast-paced lifestyle and the corresponding need for quick turnovers. And some will feature as many as seven, providing a significant thrust to the state's pledge to become more environmentally sustainable and to reduce its carbon footprint.
