Arizona's labor force is gearing up for a significant boost with the introduction of Governor Katie Hobbs' Talent Ready AZ Initiative. The comprehensive plan, unveiled yesterday, aspires to meld education and training into a robust pipeline funneling Arizonans directly into well-compensated positions, closely aligned with the growth sectors of the regional economy. “I’m laser-focused on attracting and growing business and creating good-paying jobs for Arizonans,” Governor Hobbs stated, emphasizing the importance of equipping the workforce for diversified fields such as advanced manufacturing, cyber security, health care, and clean energy.
The governor's strategic advancement didn’t emerge out of a vacuum but as the fruit of concerted efforts among a constellation of state agencies, higher education institutions, and private industry collaborators, Governor Hobbs signed an executive order which brought the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet into existence. The cabinet, a collective of agencies ranging from the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity to the Governor’s Office of Youth, Faith, and Family, is tasked with ensuring the initiative’s alignment with industry demands and program designs.
Further detailing the initiative’s breadth, the Governor’s Office of Strategic Initiatives will extend support to the Talent Ready AZ Initiative and the Governor’s Workforce Cabinet. The intent is clear: to construct a framework where education meets workforce activities, a synergy meant to lift the state's economic prospects. “This critical work wouldn’t be possible without collaboration across state agencies, private industry, and our world class higher education system,” Governor Hobbs elucidated, acknowledging the multifaceted approach to workforce preparedness.
Mark Gaspers, Chairman of the Workforce Arizona Council, lauded the initiative for its potential to far outmatch job growth in other states, citing the precise delineation of business training needs and the agility of education partners as critical to promoting quality jobs. "A Workforce Cabinet dedicated to enabling these sector partnerships will position Arizona to outpace job growth in other states," Gaspers told the Office of the Governor. The Executive Order also demands state agencies report on workforce matters, creating a novel inventory of workforce programs and relevant data.
Making a direct investment in the state's workforce, Governor Hobbs mandated that at least 1 percent of federal grants to the state are earmarked for workforce development, translating into more than $25M fueling Arizona's economic future. With annual reports on progress and improvements required from the Workforce Cabinet, the state aims to constantly refine and enhance its strategy to benefit Arizona’s workers and families.
