In an initiative to bolster democratic participation, Secretary of State Adrian Fontes spotlighted five Arizona colleges for their exemplary performance in student voter engagement during the lead-up to the 2022 midterm elections. As per a press release from the Arizona Secretary of State’s office, this commendation is part of Arizona's commitment to strengthen democracy and civic engagement among the youth.
“I commend ASU, NAU, and our community colleges for setting a high benchmark in student civic engagement," Fontes stated to the Arizona Secretary of State website. Their efforts are not only pivotal for the upcoming 2024 elections but also instill a sense of civic faith enduringly within Arizona. A 35.1% voting turnout positioned Arizona State University at the forefront among four-year institutions, while Scottsdale Community College led community colleges with a 39.1% turnout. Northern Arizona University outshined with the highest voter registration rate of 75.3%, and Mesa Community College wasn't far behind at 72.8%.
Nonetheless, a stark revelation was that from over a thousand campuses involved in the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement at Tufts University, only 10% witnessed an increase in turnout since 2018. Paradise Valley Community College, however, marked a 2.7% increase, earning national attention by snagging the Best in Class Award for Most Improved Voting Rate at a Hispanic-Serving Institution.
These accolades underscore the concerted efforts of higher education institutions across the state to ensure nonpartisan involvement in election processes. "Their dedication prepares us for the 2024 elections, and also strengthens Arizona’s civic faith for years to come," Secretary Fontes told the press release. The data revealed by the NSLVE emphasizes the resolve of these colleges to mobilize students at the ballot box in a significant, nonpartisan manner, setting precedents for others to follow suit. Moreover, the Secretary of State's office is a proud affiliate of the 2024 Arizona Campus Voting Challenge, reinforcing its commitment to these objectives.
