Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens publicly shared his condolences, reflecting the sentiment of many who felt the impact of Mutombo’s legacy both on and off the basketball court.
Mayor Dickens visited Mutombo and his wife, Rose, last month, a meeting that now carries deep significance in the wake of the athlete's passing. "I am grateful for the opportunity to visit with him and his wife Rose at their home last month and express the gratitude and pride Atlantans and millions worldwide held for such a truly good man," Dickens said, according to a statement on the City of Atlanta. "He is not just a Hall of Famer—he is irreplaceable."
Dikembe Mutombo, a prominent figure in basketball, was also known for his extensive humanitarian efforts. His influence extended beyond his achievements on the court. Off the court, Mutombo advocated for health and wellness in his home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo and internationally.
