An Atlanta Police Department Sergeant was injured early this morning in what has been characterized as an accidental discharge of a firearm. According to the official APD release, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. at 3493 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. The injured officer was in the process of submitting a recovered firearm into evidence when the gun accidentally went off, striking him in the leg.
The officer, whose name has not been released, received immediate medical care from responding units who used a tourniquet to control his bleeding. He was then taken to Grady Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition. This incident highlights the risks officers face, even during routine tasks like evidence handling, which can unexpectedly lead to danger and harm.
The Atlanta Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the firearm discharge. While the incident raises questions about firearm safety, the department has not yet detailed any policy or procedural changes. Ensuring the safety of both officers and the public remains a priority.
