Early Sunday morning, tragedy struck on the roads of Aurora when a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle. According to KDVR, the incident occurred near South Parker Road and South Peoria Street, where Aurora police were called to the scene of the deadly crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at approximately 6 a.m.
As the investigation unfolded, it was determined that a white Infiniti SUV, heading southbound on South Parker Road, careened out of control, collided with another vehicle and the pedestrian, subsequently crashing into a light pole and two trees. The pedestrian, a man whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, succumbed to his injuries at the scene, as 9News reports. Remarkably, no injuries were reported among the vehicle occupants.
Further investigation by the police led to the arrest of 24-year-old Jose Perez, the driver of the Infiniti. Perez faces charges including vehicular homicide, DUI, and reckless driving. Police have cited alcohol intoxication and excessive speed as factors that may have contributed to the harrowing incident, as per Denver7. The collision and its aftermath resulted in a closure of the southbound S. Parker Road, which was later reopened around 4 p.m. after several hours of investigative work by authorities.
The devastating event sparks renewed conversations about road safety and the lethal consequences of impaired driving. While Jose Perez sits under arrest, a community grapples with the loss of life, and a family prepares to mourn. Updates on this incident are anticipated as police continue the painstaking work of piecing together the moments that led up to the collision and as the city of Aurora processes another name added to the toll of its streets.
