Berkeley drivers should be prepared for evening travel disruptions on September 3rd and 4th. Caltrans has announced that a section of Gilman Street, between 2nd Street and 4th Street, will be temporarily closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night due to construction improvements around the Interstate 80 Gilman interchange.
Construction crews will reconfigure street markings, curb paint, and striping as part of the Gilman Street Roundabout Project, which aims to enhance traffic flow and safety in the area. While these improvements are expected to be beneficial, the closures may cause delays as detours redirect vehicles onto alternative routes. Flaggers will be stationed at both ends of the closure to manage local traffic.
Detours have been established for drivers. Westbound traffic on Gilman Street will be rerouted via Fourth Street, Cedar Street, and Eastshore Highway to loop back to Gilman. Eastbound drivers will be advised to take 2nd Street, Cedar Street, and then rejoin Gilman. Caltrans is taking steps to minimize disruptions, providing active guidance through signage, pavement delineation, and portable message signs to help ease the temporary impact on travel routines.
