In a somber turn of events, Blanco, Texas, recently witnessed the conclusion of a tragic case involving the death of an infant. On August 30, Danielle Ivy Dechert, aged 27, pleaded guilty to the charge of Injury to a Child – Recklessly Causing Death/Serious Bodily Injury. Dechert was sentenced to 40 years in prison, a decision meted out in the 33rd Judicial District Court of Blanco County.
According to court records, Dechert, under the influence of an illegal substance, was accused of smothering her 5-month-old child, Rheylene Ledesma, during co-sleeping. Insidiously, the mother did not seek emergency medical services or provide any form of aid for over eight hours after the infant became unresponsive. The Texas Attorney General's Office reported that the defendant's already severe punishment was further enhanced due to a previous felony involving a vehicle pursuit and a separate count of child endangerment from back in 2014.
The case, led by Texas Ranger Jose Rodriguez, was prosecuted by Assistant Attorneys General Amanda Dillon and Jamie Tillman. Contributing to the effort was Sgt. Brian Seales from the Office of the Attorney General. Their concerted efforts resulted in the substantial sentence now facing Dechert, marking a bittersweet justice for the young victim.
