Chaos erupted early Thursday morning when Broomfield police were alerted to a disturbance at the Arista Flats apartments, which escalated into an "active shooting" situation. As reported by Denver7, the encounter began around 6:34 a.m. and unfolded over more than two hours, leading to a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area.
Residents of the complex were jarred awake by the sounds of gunfire, which, according to one resident's statement, as obtained by CBS News, were initially mistaken for a nail gun. "So my roommate told me, 'Do you have any idea what's going on? There's cops everywhere.' I said, 'I don't. I see them' and she said, 'I heard what sounded like a nail gun this morning,' she thought maybe it was someone below us nailing something to the wall or something. She was like, 'Was that gunshots do you think?' and it turns out, yeah, probably it was," recounted the shaken resident. Amidst the confusion, officers made forced entry into an apartment and engaged in a gun battle with the suspect.
The confrontation ended when police took a male suspect into custody, while a woman who was also involved in the shooting was injured and subsequently hospitalized along with the suspect. As of now, their conditions remain undisclosed, and the nature of their relationship, if any, has not been made clear. Denver7 was informed by Broomfield police public information officer, Rachel Haslett, that the suspect was aiming for officers during the incident, further intensifying the dangers of the situation.
The entire ordeal lasted close to four hours, during which the community's sense of security was deeply rattled. The suspect, who has not yet been named, was apprehended following the exchange of gunfire with police. The events of the day have left the community seeking answers and calm as they process the terror that descended upon their home. The story is still developing, and further details are awaited as investigations continue, as noted by KKTV.
