A tragedy occurred in Cobb County late Friday when a burglary escalated into gunfire, leading to the death of a suspect and injuries to two police officers. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), officers responded to an alarm at Adventure Outdoors on S. Cobb Drive.
Arriving at approximately 11:45 p.m., Smyrna Police Department officers were directed by an employee who claimed the presence of an intruder. The man, later identified as Emilio Aguilar of Marietta, refused to comply with the officers' orders and, during the attempt to detain him, managed to open fire with a rifle, shooting two officers in the process. With two officers down, their legs struck by bullets, the scene quickly spiraled into chaos.
Backup was already on the scene as three Cobb County police officers had arrived just before the shooting commenced. These officers, faced with the immediate threat, discharged their weapons, fatally wounding Aguilar. The injured Smyrna officers received transport to a local hospital; fortunately, they suffered from injuries that were not life-threatening.
