A Collinsville woman faces serious charges following a domestic incident that escalated to violence. Edith Caudillo, 27, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm on Wednesday, according to First Alert 4. The charges stem from a dispute that occurred on Tuesday evening in the unincorporated community of State Park Place, near Collinsville.
Madison County sheriff’s deputies reported to the scene of the shooting at approximately 5:37 p.m. on Rene Avenue, where they discovered a 31-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the chest, as detailed in a statement by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office obtained by Fox2Now. Despite the gravity of the situation, the victim, identified by authorities as Sergio Angulo-Peraza, was transported to a St. Louis hospital and is said to be in stable condition. The connection between Caudillo and Angulo-Peraza is personal, as the two had been dating prior to the tragic unfolding of events.
Law enforcement authorities detained Caudillo at the scene, where she allegedly remained until their arrival. Caudillo's confinement in county jail was reported by several sources including First Alert 4 and Fox2Now. The initial court appearance for Caudillo has not yet been scheduled as of the latest reports.
The incident reportedly occurred as Caudillo went to the home they shared to collect personal items. A pretrial detention petition filed by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office suggested, "Caudillo pulled a gun from her waistband and shot Angulo-Peraza in his chest." Court records cited by BND indicate surveillance video captured the moment two shots were fired, approximately five seconds apart, the motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed.
