The City of Dearborn is gearing up for a celebration unlike any other – the grand opening of its first-ever PEACE Park. On Friday, Sept. 27, from 7 to 9 p.m., the city invites the community to 22271 West Village Dr. for an evening of festivities. This kickstarts the unveiling of the Park Equity and Access for Civil Engagement (PEACE) Project, a hefty investment geared towards revitalizing the city's public spaces, as detailed in a recent announcement by city officials.

After breaking ground in August 2023, PEACE Park West transformed a once mundane surface parking lot into a vibrant outdoor gallery of green. Set within the bustling West Downtown Dearborn business district, just strutting across from West Village Commons, the park is slated to be the first of three such urban oases under Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud's grand vision of sustainability and civic harmony. "A year ago, we embarked on a journey to invest in the most monumental transformation of our city’s natural resource, its green spaces, and broke ground on the PEACE Park West. Today, we celebrate the opening of the first of the three new urban parks, all of which will serve as centerpieces in three of our city’s iconic neighborhoods," Hammoud enthused in a statement reported by the city's news release.

The park is stacked with modern amenities like wifi, outdoor seating, and shaded walkways, all anchored by a pavilion with top-tier sound and visual tech. Beyond giving locals a shiny new spot to hang out, the park's green design plays hard defense against flooding using rain gardens and a clever water management system. "I am proud to welcome everyone - Dearborn residents and visitors - to this premiere public space that will enhance our community, environmental sustainability, and economic growth," Hammoud added, according to the release.

Banding together to bankroll this $29.2 million green dream were entities including the City, Wayne County, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, each doling out multi-million dollar chunks. The cherry on top was a sizeable matching fund from the East Dearborn Downtown Development Authority. Tucking behind these significant investments, Wayne County Deputy Executive Assad Turfe teed up some praise, noting, “Wayne County Executive Warren Evans and I are proud to support the City of Dearborn and Mayor Hammoud’s historic grand opening of the city’s first PEACE Park. We are proud to empower and partner with southeast Michigan communities like Dearborn through Wayne County’s grant funds to make integral projects such as Dearborn’s PEACE initiative possible,” as stated in the city's announcement.

The city has more in store with additional PEACE Parks in the works, including one at the former Dearborn City Hall site and another in the Southend neighborhood. These endeavors form part of a broader effort that also extends to park amenity upgrades and pool renovations across Dearborn.
