DeKalb County is set to launch a new collaborative event in conjunction with World Planning Day, focusing on urban planning and sustainability. On Nov. 9, Commissioner Ted Terry, alongside DeKalb County Planning and Sustainability, will host the inaugural "World Planning Day featuring the DeKalb Green New Deal Festival," as per an announcement made on the county’s official website. This event seeks to combine community celebration with a plan for a more sustainable future in DeKalb County.
The day-long gathering will focus on the importance of sustainability and urban planning in creating an environmentally resilient community. According to a statement obtained by the DeKalb County news release, Commissioner Terry expressed this union of local businesses, performers, and organizations as "a powerful reflection of our community’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate resilience." Community members from all backgrounds are invited to share their voices, learn, and enjoy themselves.
This is not the county's first rodeo when it comes to climate activism. The DeKalb Green New Deal has not only spurred the genesis of over 700 climate champions but also steered 20 climate action policies, resolutions, and initiatives into existence since its 2023 inception. Larry Washington, Long Range Planning Manager, told DeKalb County, "This collaboration highlights that everyone has the power to make an impact, and by working together, we can create a sustainable future for DeKalb."
Looking back at the previous year, the event attracted a significant crowd, demonstrating that DeKalb County residents are actively engaged with their environment. Participants not only attended but also took part in activities like planting trees with Trees Atlanta and learning about water conservation in a rain barrel workshop. For those looking to get involved this November, the upcoming agenda includes interactive workshops aimed at developing actionable steps for long-term sustainability and climate resilience. Additionally, the festival will feature live entertainment and a variety of local food options, ensuring a day that is both educational and enjoyable.
