This Sunday morning, the Bay Area has been veiled in a cloak of dense fog, particularly affecting Monterey Bay, its coastline, and the Northern Salinas Valley. Visibility has been significantly reduced, prompting the National Weather Service in San Francisco to issue a Dense Fog Advisory that will remain in place through 9 AM. Motorists are advised to exercise caution due to the poor visibility conditions that make travel treacherous in some parts. According to NWS San Francisco Bay Area, "Widespread dense fog will impact Monterey Bay, Monterey Bay coastline, and the Northern Salinas Valley through Sunday morning."
In addition to the fog, the Bay Area continues to experience a spell of warmer than usual temperatures. Still, a slightly cooler trend will take effect this Sunday afternoon. The mercury is slated to rise into the mid 80's to mid 90's across the interior, with cooler coastal areas. An "upper level trough digging into the Pacific Northwest" is behind the impending cooldown that will start on Tuesday, as outlined by the Area Forecast Discussion. Patchy fog is also likely to redevelop overnight, especially near the coast and North Bay valleys.
For air travel, the foggy conditions pose challenges, with visibility as low as 1/4SM reported at times. "Patchy fog is developing throughout the North Bay and Central Coast with visibilities down to 1/4SM observed in the last hour", the NWS report mentioned. Pilots and passengers should be prepared for potential delays due to the weather. Flights are expected to return to Visual Flight Rules (VFR) conditions during the afternoon and evening, but lower conditions and fog may come back this evening.
Looking towards the end of the week, the marine outlook from the NWS warns of "moderate northerly to northwesterly winds" that will continue through the weekend and a stronger upper-level low-pressure system anticipated to bring "widespread fresh to strong northwesterly winds and elevated wave heights" across coastal waters by midweek. This sets the stage for unsettled maritime conditions extending into the next weekend. Mariners should stay vigilant and prepare for the heightened winds and waves, as detailed in the Marine section of the Area Forecast Discussion.
