A suspect's attempt to escape a traffic stop by darting across a Detroit-area freeway almost came to a fatal end, said police. The incident, captured on bodycam footage, showed the man narrowly avoiding collision with a semi-truck on I-94 after Dearborn officers pulled him over for a traffic violation and found he had no valid license, was wanted on warrants, and was under parole, as reported by CBS News Detroit.

After officers attempted to interview the driver, he fled across the interstate, setting off a foot chase that spanned lanes of traffic and nearly caused what could have been a separate tragedy, the suspect's pursuit continued as officers launched a drone, according to information from FOX 2 Detroit.

The man was arrested and charged with multiple felonies, including carrying a concealed weapon, felony firearm, felony resisting an officer, and felon in possession after officers recovered a gun and body armor inside his vehicle. Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin expressed his relief at the non-lethal conclusion of this ordeal. "Behavior like this will not be tolerated in the City of Dearborn; we will continue to pursue and arrest dangerous suspects and charge them with the appropriate crimes. We are fortunate to have advanced technology, including drones, to assist us in our day-to-day operations to locate these suspects. This incident demonstrates the efficient and safe collaboration between our Day Shift Officers and Drone Officers in locating and apprehending a dangerous suspect. Thank you to our Day Shift Team and all the Police Officers involved for a job well done!" Shahin told CBS News Detroit.

Shahin further detailed that the suspect, still unnamed pending arraignment, was already on parole for armed robbery and gun offenses, the irony here being that not even a year and a half later he was found with body armor and another firearm, per Audacy. While the chase led to a fortuitously safe arrest without further incidents, it coincided with a separate two-car crash on I-94 around the same time which, Shahin confirmed, had no connection to the foot pursuit.
