An SUV was involved in a fatal collision with a bicyclist last Thursday in Allegan County, leading to the arrest of the vehicle's driver. The deadly incident occurred around 10:15 p.m. on 111th Avenue near 54th Street in Lee Township, as confirmed by local authorities. According to WWMT, the SUV, which had several occupants at the time, was traveling eastbound when it struck the cyclist, who subsequently succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene. The aftermath of the crash included an arrest as officials took the driver into custody pending arraignment on related charges.
The Allegan County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police are leading the investigation into the crash. While the cyclist's identity has been withheld pending family notification, the driver's name will soon become public record upon arraignment. As reported by WOODTV, officials believe that alcohol and speed were contributory factors in the tragic event. The road was closed for several hours to facilitate the preliminary investigation by authorities, during which several people inside the not-injured SUV were found.
The loss comes as a grave reminder of the risks present on the road, especially for cyclists sharing it with motorized vehicles. As of now, the driver is awaiting legal proceedings at Allegan County Jail, where they were taken and lodged after being arrested near the scene of the accident, as stated by FOX 17 News. The exact charges to be faced are yet to be determined as the case unfolds.
