Residents of El Paso County may notice an uptick in law enforcement presence along their commutes this week, as regional police departments unite to tackle a surge in expired vehicle registrations and related violations. As reported by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Joseph Roybal announced his office's collaboration with the Colorado Springs Police Department and other local forces. The shared mission is to rigorously identify and swiftly penalize unregistered or delinquent vehicles.
The initiative responds to citizen concerns over the high number of vehicles operating illegally without proper registration. "The citizens of El Paso County have voiced their concerns and frustration over the increase in vehicles with expired registration or no road registration at all," Sheriff Roybal said, as per El Paso County Sheriff's Office. El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Steve Schleiker chimed in to remind citizens of the accessible vehicle registration options available, including various kiosks across the Pikes Peak region. These efforts, as stated by Schleiker, "pay for our roads and bridges here in El Paso County, in our municipalities, and across Colorado."
Emphasizing the operation's focus, Roybal added, "While my deputies continue to prioritize enforcement of violations such as speeding, distracted driving, reckless behavior, and impaired driving, we will increase our focus on identifying vehicles with expired registrations during this planned operation."
