A Washtenaw County home was decimated by an explosion and subsequent fire on Wednesday, prompting an extensive investigation and community response. The incident, occurring around noon near the intersection of Frains Lake and Prospect roads, resulted in one person being hospitalized with injuries. According to MLive, the injured man was asleep on his couch when he was jarred awake by the blaze.
Fire crews faced significant challenges, as reported by Dan Kimball, fire marshal of the Superior Township Fire Department, during an interview with MLive. The area lacks hydrants, necessitating water to be shuttled in to combat the heavy flames. Witnesses described the intensity of the situation, with smoke visible from miles away.
The exact origins of the fire remain undetermined, with both explosive and non-explosive elements under consideration. Fire officials are focusing on the back of the house where several explosions were heard. The homeowner, who dedicated much of his life to constructing and maintaining the now-lost estate, was hospitalized with smoke inhalation. Despite the chaos and destruction witnessed, Chief Chevrette emphasized the perilous nature of the fast-moving fire, exacerbated by winds out of the northwest, as he detailed to FOX 2 Detroit.
