The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has backed the expansion of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport with a substantial monetary commitment. A total of $290 million has been earmarked for the construction of the Fourth Parallel Runway, as confirmed in a Letter of Intent. This development is part of the $4 billion 'Destination CLT' project, aimed at improving the airport's capacity and functionality.

According to QC News, the runway, measuring 10,000 feet in length and 150 feet in width, will be located west of Runway 18C/36C. It seeks to significantly reduce aircraft operating time, fuel consumption, and emissions, in addition to cutting the wait times endured by passengers. This aspect of the project is accentuated given that Charlotte Douglas International Airport boasts the largest share of connecting passengers in the nation.

Haley Gentry, CLT Chief Executive Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the FAA's notable investment, "We are thrilled to receive this notable investment from the FAA," she told WCCB Charlotte. Gentry believes that this funding will empower the airport to continue making strides in a project that holds national significance for infrastructure enhancement.

The construction schedule outlined a start with grading progress through mid-2026, followed by concrete paving beginning in 2025, as reported by Business North Carolina. The completion of paving is anticipated by early 2027, leading up to the runway's commissioning scheduled for fall of that year. Located at the Airport Overlook at CLT, visitors can presently catch a glimpse of the ongoing work on the runway and taxiway constructions. As the project advances, certain roadways nearby are expected to have closures and detours, unfortunately disrupting traffic patterns for the time being.

The impact of this expansion is not just local but national. Shannetta R. Griffin, FAA Associate Administrator for Airports, emphasized the dual benefits for Charlotte's travelers and visitors from nearly 200 cities connected by the hub. "The FAA and the Biden-Harris Administration are pleased to assist CLT in ensuring the safest and most stress-free experience for travelers possible," Griffin stated in an interview cited by Business North Carolina
