A tragic incident unfolded last night when a 21-year-old man from Rodney is feared to have drowned following the capsizing of a boat on Lower Evans Lake in Mecosta County, as detailed in a report by WZZM13.
The man was fishing with a companion, a 24-year-old, when their vessel overturned around 10 p.m., plunging them into the lake's dark waters; the older man managed to swim to safety and summon assistance, yet despite efforts, the younger was not seen surfacing, leading to fears of a fatal outcome, this according to the Mecosta County Sheriff's Office as reported by WOODTV.
The Sheriff's Office indicated that the initial search was halted due to safety concerns posed by the poor visibility engulfing the area, marking an abrupt and unresolved end to last night's endeavors to locate the presumed drowned individual, whose identity continues to be withheld; efforts were slated to resume the subsequent morning when conditions were more favorable, as UpNorthLive reported.
The search operations are expected to garner increased support come daylight, with the local Sheriff’s Office leading what has shifted from a rescue to a recovery mission.
