Sunday witnessed an unexpected disruption at Chabad of Greater Orlando when a fire broke out at the synagogue's headquarters in Casselberry. The fire department received the call around 11:13 a.m., and crews from the Seminole County Fire Department were quickly dispatched to the scene on Howell Branch Road. As ClickOrlando reported, the blaze primarily affected the Congregation Ahavas Yisrael building, sending smoke and fire from its roof.
Despite the severity of the fire, authorities have confirmed that the building was empty when the fire started, and the nearby Hebrew School was evacuated as a precaution. According to the Casselberry Police Department, a vigilant security presence had ascertained that only authorized individuals had entered or left the property around the time of the incident. In a report by WTSP, this claim reinforced the preliminary status of the ongoing investigation, as no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under the microscope, with the State Fire Marshal spearheading the investigation into the its origins. While the community processes this event, a fundraising initiative has been swiftly organized to aid in the synagogue's restoration efforts. Information on the fundraiser page was brought online shortly after the fire and is seeking contributions for rebuilding.
