Maricopa County's parched landscape has led to the extension of fire bans across its regional parks, with the ban remaining in effect until October 31 of this year. At the helm of this decision is the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department, driven by an acute awareness of the potential devastation that wildfires pose in such dry conditions. Despite entering the autumn months, they emphasize the necessity of continued vigilance against fires.
According to a recent announcement, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Sellers stated, "The triple-digit temperatures and dry monsoon season have created the perfect circumstances for wildfires to spread quickly, posing a threat to communities across Maricopa County." Sellers urge community members to take personal responsibility in adhering to these precautions to ensure collective safety.
This summer, an inadvertent spark from railway maintenance set off the Rose Fire, which consumed about 100 acres of the Hassayampa River Preserve. Other areas, such as the McDowell Mountain Regional Park, were not spared, witnessing the aggressive spread of the McDowell and Gate wildfires that incinerated more than a thousand acres of the Sonoran Desert terrain.
"We've also had close calls near the Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area and Cave Creek Regional Park this season," noted R.J. Cardin, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation director, as per Maricopa County. To prevent further incidents, fire restrictions will be strictly enforced. Campfires, fire pits, charcoal grills, and even smoking outside of contained vehicles or campers remain prohibited, with exceptions only made for gas and propane grills in designated areas. Violators might find themselves on the receiving end of a citation for breaching Park Rule R-113.
All eleven of Maricopa County's regional parks are subject to the fire ban, including popular destinations such as Lake Pleasant Regional Park and the White Tank Mountain Regional Park.
