Firefighters converged on the site of Americas Styrenics in Channahon, a suburb, late Wednesday night following a report of an overheated railcar due to a chemical reaction. According to details shared by NBC Chicago, plant employees initiated cooling procedures on the railcar that had "experienced a thermal event" and requested the assistance of the local fire department. The firefighters subsequently worked to continue those cooling efforts and also to manage vapor suppression to collect any airborne material released.

Despite the thermal incident, officials reassured that there was "no ongoing threat to the public," still residents were cautioned to steer clear of the area for unspecified security reasons. Given by employees who worked diligently throughout the incident, set up streams and handlines were tasked with the cooling of the railcar by firefighters, and temperatures inside were reportedly improving by Thursday. Meanwhile, air quality around the site continues to be monitored, suggesting that the situation, while under control, is still being treated with caution and precision.

The Shaw Local News added that the fire crews established large-volume master streams and handlines to aid in the railcar's cooling and vapor suppression process. Hazardous Materials Technicians from Division 15's Hazardous Materials Response Team were added to the scene to monitor the air quality. According to the Channahon Fire Protection District, the condition inside the railcar is under constant review and is progressively getting better.

The chemicals at the core of the incident have yet to be disclosed, but specialists continue to remain on the scene. American Styrenics, the site of the event, operates as a producer of polystyrene and styrene monomers and champions the circular recycling of polystyrene. Established to provide a safe environment, the Will County Emergency Management Agency, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, and Illinois Emergency Management Agency have all been notified about the incident.
