As we step into September, the spotlight turns to an issue often shrouded in silence: suicide prevention. Marking this month's importance, the Folsom Police Department reminds locals it's also Gun Storage Check Week, a time for firearm owners to reflect on their responsibilities and take proactive measures in safeguarding their weapons.
Statistics throw a harsh light on the reality, with approximately 54% of firearm-related fatalities being the result of suicide, an act that often is preventable. Recognizing the role secure gun storage plays, the police emphasize the need for owners to reassess their storage practices, the lack of diligence can, in the end, amount to a matter of life and death for someone in a vulnerable state, according to Folsom Police Department Facebook post.
For individuals dealing with a crisis or worried about a loved one, the department encourages reaching out to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. This essential resource offers support and guidance. Veterans in distress can also access the Veterans Crisis Line by pressing 1 after dialing 988. Additionally, the Folsom Police Department is promoting safer gun storage by offering free cable gun locks at their headquarters, located at 46 Natoma Street. This initiative provides community members with essential safety tools.
