Hillsboro is setting the scene for a nostalgic night of classic horrors and cinematic history; Two cult classic films will be unspooling on October 25 at the Hillsboro Futsal & Soccer Academy for a Creature Double Feature, and best of all, it's free. Everyone is invited to enjoy a back-to-back screening featuring a Spanish-language version of "Dracula" followed by the classic "Creature from the Black Lagoon."
Bela Lugosi’s portrayal of Dracula is iconic, but Carlos Villarias’s performance in the Spanish version of "Dracula" is often seen as a hidden treasure. Critics and fans alike recommend it highly. Filmed at Universal Studios, the Spanish crew worked through the night while the English crew worked during the day, resulting in a cinematic masterclass. Each evening, Villarias and his team would watch Lugosi’s performance, strategize, and reportedly create a version that is even more mysterious, rich, and atmospheric.
According to the City of Hillsboro announcement, the second rendition of the horrific heroes was seemingly lost to time for a stint. After premiering in Havana, Cuba in 1931, the Villarias' "Dracula" didn't get its due limelight – overpowered by the charisma of Lugosi – and subsequently vanished from popular discourse. It wasn't until the 1970s that a decayed copy emerged in New Jersey, rekindling appreciation for this version which is now recognized and preserved in the US Library of Congress' National Film Registry, as of 2015.
The double feature continues with the classic "Creature from the Black Lagoon," where scientists encounter the fearsome Gill-man in the Amazon jungle. Since its release in 1954, it has kept audiences on the edge of their seats. This screening offers a great chance to see films that shaped the horror genre. Snacks from M&M Marketplace will be available until 8 PM, and blankets and chairs are welcome for comfort. Doors open at 5:30 PM, with "Dracula" starting at 6 PM and "Creature from the Black Lagoon" at 8 PM.
