The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Berrien County, which began as a routine traffic stop and escalated into a dramatic chase on Monday. GBI agents were called by the Georgia State Patrol to review the pursuit, which fortunately did not result in any injuries, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Speeding was the catalyst for this incident, as a GSP trooper made an attempt to decisively halt Roy Kyle Mathis, aged 53 and a resident of Berrien County, which he stubbornly refused, choosing instead to flee. To quickly terminate the chase, a Pursuit Immobilization Technique (PIT maneuver) was utilized. According to a press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, when the trooper tried to extract Mathis from his vehicle post-maneuver, it led to a confrontation where the officer discharged his firearm at Mathis's car. The latter proceeded to drive away, eventually crashing into a tree in a nearby residence.
Mathis was forcibly removed from his car after the trooper used a taser. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation report states that while Mathis did not have any bullet wounds, he was assessed by emergency medical services at the scene and taken to the hospital for a thorough examination. He was released after the check-up and is now held in Berrien County Jail.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been tasked with spearheading an independent investigation to meticulously piece together the facts and context of the shooting. This move is routine for incidents involving law enforcement to ensure transparent analysis free from departmental bias. Upon completion of this inquiry, the collected evidence and findings will be handed over to the Alapaha District Attorney's Office, confirming that due process is underway and will be diligently followed through.
