An officer-involved shooting that resulted in the death of 20-year-old Ivan Felton is currently under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), as requested by Newton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO). The fatal incident took place on September 7 at Salem Glen Apartments in Newton County.
According to a press release by the GBI, the deputies responded to a call regarding a person shot. Upon arrival, they encountered an off-duty Rockdale County Sheriff's Office deputy who had discharged his weapon at Felton. The off-duty deputy reported witnessing Felton shooting at another resident of the apartments and chasing them before he intervened and shot Felton.
The preliminary findings presented by the GBI reveal that multiple witnesses corroborated the sequence of events that led to the tragic outcome. Witnesses saw Felton actively engaging in shooting at a resident, prompting the off-duty deputy to take action. The investigation is ongoing, and the intent is to present a thorough and independent review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Felton was pronounced dead at the scene and no deputies were injured during the confrontation. The GBI will continue its investigation and upon its completion, the findings will be submitted to the Newton County District Attorney’s Office (Alcovy Judicial Circuit) for a thorough legal assessment and review.
