The legal plight of the activists dubbed the "Golden Gate 26" continues as they faced preliminary hearings in San Francisco yesterday. The group, who made headlines back in April for halting traffic on the iconic bridge to protest against U.S. support of Israeli military action in Gaza, stands accused of a range of charges, including felony conspiracy and false imprisonment, as reported by KTVU. In support, a sizable contingent from the Bay Area community turned up at the courthouse, signaling the area's rich history of political activism.

According to KTVU, eight activists face felony charges, and the remainder are misdemeanors. All 26 are accused of 38 counts of false imprisonment, among other allegations. Advocates for the activists, including the Arab Resource and Organizing Center (AROC), rallied outside the San Francisco Hall of Justice, arguing that the protests were a constitutionally protected form of expression. A not-guilty plea was entered for those charged with felonies, and their defense contends that District Attorney Brooke Jenkins holds an anti-Palestine bias, which influenced the bringing of the charges. The next hearing for those facing felony counts is slated for Sept. 30, while those charged with misdemeanors will have to wait until Oct. 24 to have their say in court, according to NBC Bay Area.

Claims of bias against DA Jenkins are central to the defendant's arguments, with their attorneys alleging that she has engaged in meetings with leaders from the Israeli consulate. They're demanding that she recuse herself "for filing charges and attempting to attain a conviction based on bias and prejudice, based on ethnicity and political views," Elizabeth Camacho, a defense attorney for one of the protesters, told KTVU. Jenkins, however, previously refuted claims of a political motive, stating that the charges were based solely on the investigation by the California Highway Patrol and applicable laws.

In an outpour of local support, a post from the Jersey Noah Instagram account described the courtroom as "packed" during the hearings and voiced the community's demands for an end to what is termed as the "US-backed genocide of Palestinians in Gaza". The post, which emphasized the city's legacy of activism and the ongoing protests for Palestinian rights, called for DA Jenkins to drop all charges against the arrested activists. Amidst this backdrop, San Franciscans appear steadfast in their support, echoing the sentiment that the fight will continue until Palestine is free.
